Winter Driving Tips

  1. Stay home and avoid driving in bad conditions if possible.
  2. Don’t drive if you are sleepy.
  3. Let someone know your travel plans and itinerary.
  4. Make sure your tires are properly inflated.
  5. Try to wait until the snow plows have cleared the roads.
  6. Decrease your speed, allow plenty of distance for stopping (3x normal amount of space is recommended).
  7. When you brake, remember to hit the brakes gently in order to avoid skidding.
  8. Use your car lights for greater visibility.
  9. If you need traction in slippery conditions, use your low gears.
  10. Bridges will freeze and become slippery before the rest of the road.
  11. Carry sand, kitty litter, fireplace ashes or salt in case you are stuck in snow and need traction to get out.

If you become snow bound, stay with your vehicle. Carry a cell phone, emergency food and clothing in case you get stuck.
