Big Horse Meadows
When we three boys hiked in over mountain home (Glen Martin) to the Santa Ana, there was a single cabin on the flat at the top of the grade, and a man occupied it. As we passed, a good fifty feet away, a ruffian’s unshaven head was thrust out a small window and a rough voice told us to “go on, get on your way”. This came as quite a shock to us, in such a peaceful surrounding, that we commented on the incident for some distance, wondering at the cause of such a demonstration. What was there to hide and why all this roughness? Could it be bank robbers?
Five years later it was explained when I made the trip to Greyback (MT. San Gorgonio).
Eight of us with a skinny pack animal (“Old Whitey”) came over the same trail and camped out above Seven Oaks. Taking the trail across the river we passed through Horse Meadows all okay, but with the many paths beyond we ended up lower on the South Fork than our destination. Back we went and camped at the Meadows, seeing a few head of stock under the trees at a distance but missing the real picture.
Along toward midnight it began – a veritable merry go round. Around forty head made a circus ring of that meadow, going about twice before stopping. We shot off our revolvers, but had little sleep for the ground fairly shook with their hoof beats and it would have been a sad day for us if our horses had ever broken away and joined that bunch.
Now the gateway was at Glen Martin and that ruffian was the guard on lookout. This was stolen stock and feeding on the grass of the meadows! We climbed Greyback, my hardest trip of many climbs, over rocks as big as a house and sand loose to the steps. But Dry Lake was a beautiful body of water and the mountain lion never quite reached camp, though his voice did.
