Ninety-One Hundred Stumps
Those out on the lake today have little idea what the margin of it was like in the early days when the water was even at a higher level than now. Stumps, big and little, high and low, were in front of nearly all lots, some as high as eight feet, and made a miserable blot on the landscape. These were the ones left by the sawmill cutting on Windy Point.
They were on the Water Co. land, but the later did little except at Windy Point – work done by Ed Ragan. It was a hard, dirty job; took powder, tractors, saws and men, gasoline and fire. I spent hundreds on Boulder Bay.
So the Chamber of Commerce organized the Lakeshore Cleanup Committee and everybody helped. First, we made a count and the total around the lake was: 9,100 stumps – believe it or not. 5400 standing and 3700 down logs – too much. Some company agreed to pull and burn a part for fifteen thousand. We had no such money.
First, some twenty men and women met in Chad’s Café for nights and typed and addressed letters to a list of property owners. We just begged for a few dollars from each to purchase powder. I believe the returns were less than seven hundred dollars. Then we tackled the job every fall for two or three years. Cliff Lynn and Rey Reynolds handled much of the powder and different gangs of a dozen men were often on the job.
The last year we had no cash, so no powder, and just cut the logs as close as the sawers could work on their knees. Then to pile the stuff, burn it and keep it going day and night was a job in itself, but nearly all the stumps were burned up.
