Winter Hiking

During the winter, the best hiking is out in the east valley, especially behind Baldwin Lake. Daytime temperatures are usually warmer causing the snow to melt. Wildlife in the area includes coyote, squirrel, rabbit, hawks, ravens and occasional eagles.

Take 2N02 (

Map) into the hills. After a quarter of a mile, you’ll see areas where you can pull off and park. Remember to display your Forest Service Pass. Passes can be purchased at the Big Bear Discovery Center (

Map).

When there is a lot of snow accumulation, we’ll hike along the road. Parts of the lake are visible with a mile. In warmer weather we will walk over to the Pacific Crest Trail and hike from there.

This area has panoramic views of Lucerne Valley, Onyx Summit, Sugarloaf Mountain, Bear Mountain, Snow Summit and Gold Mountain.

This short video shows views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit.
