Caltrans is in the midst of road repair for State Highway 330. Completion estimates range from one to two years. The video below shows the condition of the highway after the last major storm. You can see major sections fell away.
State Highway 18 through Lucerne Valley is open and in great shape. It’s the least traveled route to Bear Mountain. It does have several awesome hairpin turns. If you drive a stick shift its a lot of fun. Beware of black ice at night and in the early morning.
There are no restrictions on State Highway 38. You can pick this road up in Redlands and cruise into the mountains. The route is beautiful. It takes you through the eastern portion of the San Bernardino Mountains, around Mt. San Gorgonio and up into Big Bear Valley. Be extremely cautious during cold temperatures. The road crosses Onyx Summit at 8400 feet and can be very icy at night.
You can also come into Big Bear Lake on State Highway 18 via Waterman Canyon. The road takes you across the Rim of the World. It is scenic and worth the trip. As you head east across the mountaintop, you’ll enjoy quaint villages, beautiful trees and panoramic views. This road enters Big Bear CA through Arctic Circle. Arctic Circle is treacherous when icy and absolutely beautiful on a warm, sunny day.
