SR-18 Narrows Debris Removal Work
San Bernardino Mountains – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Maintenance crews will begin work on Monday, January 31, on State Route 18 (SR-18) in the section called “The Narrows” for approximately two weeks. The Narrows runs from SR-138 to Crest Forest Drive near Crestline. The work will remove boulders and debris that have collected in the “netted” debris flow areas along the route.
The route will be closed during daytime hours to traffic. The closure for down bound traffic will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The closure for up bound traffic will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The maintenance work is necessary to alleviate stress on the debris flow systems in preparation for future storms over the winter. Maintenance hopes to have the work completed by February 11th. Motorists are advised to use Crest Forest Drive through Crestline as the detour around the closure.
The California Highway Patrol will be on site to assist with the detour. Motorists are advised to follow all signage, verbal instructions given by CHP/workers, and drive slowly and carefully near the work zone. The signal at SR-18 and Lake Gregory Drive has recently been adjusted to accommodate the increased traffic flow on SR-18 due to the SR-330 closure.
