Pacific Crest Trail and Big Bear Lake

Living in Big Bear, one can’t help but hear about the Pacific Crest Trail. The PCT is a national hiking and horseback riding trail that extends more than 2600 miles from Mexico to Canada through some of the most beautiful natural areas of the western United States.

Around Easter time, hikers start at the southern border of California and Mexico, and head North. Big Bear is about a 2 week hike from the start. We host quite a few trekkers every year, as judged by the photos at the Big Bear City Post Office.

This weekend is very special for the PCT and Big Bear. We are hosting, “Trail Fest 2012″, starting Friday night, July 27. Head over to Northwoods Resort from 6:00 to 8:00pm for registration. You can also register after 8:00am on Saturday. Online registration is closed, but walk-ins are very welcome!

Friday evening is highlighted by a “meet and greet” at Stilwells. Authors will be reading from, “The Pacific Crest Trailside Reader”, a two-volume compilation of history and stories from, and about, the trail.

Saturday is packed with events and classes at Northwoods. There will be a Gear & Information Fair, starting at 8 in the morning. Hour long Trail Classes and other workshops continue throughout the day. During the day, activities include a Silent Auction, and the PCTA Volunteer and Partner Awards Ceremony.

The festivities don’t end there. Saturday evening, there will be a banquet dinner with Keynote Speaker, Justin “Trauma” Lichter. Justin has logged thousands of miles on trails around the world. Look forward to an exciting evening with stunning images and stories.

After dinner, join everyone for a screening of the movie, “National Geographic: Pacific Crest Trail”. Filmed in 2009, this addresses many of the trail’s views, joys and sorrows. Don’t miss it!

Sunday is open for optional activities on the PCT, itself. You can join a Trail Maintenance Project, from 8:00am until noon, tools provided.

From 9:00am until noon is a sponsored hike along the PCT. If you haven’t taken the trail before, this is a great introduction!

Concurrently, The Big Bear Discovery Center will be hosting family activities throughout the day.

This weekend is perfect for a visit to, and about, the world recognized Pacific Crest Trail. For complete details on the events and seminars, please visit the Pacific Crest Trail website at: http://www.pcta.org/
