Old Man Winter’s beard brushed over Big Bear again.

3 days of HIGH WIND is getting a little much. The house shakes all the time. Windows and doors whistle. Power goes on and off. This is what makes Big Bear Living the finest!

Needless to say, some of us are looking for Spring. Even the Old Timers are ready for a change.

Here’s a shot of the dusting that blasted through this time. Look at that CLEAR SKY!

Big Bear Lake CA; A winter advisory remains in effect until 10:00 AM this morning. Winds may gust to 35 mph. Our overnight snowfall was eight inches and another foot of accumulation is possible. Road conditions are R2, if you’re vehicle is not 4 wheel drive, you’ll need to chain up.

Snow conditions are the best -Today is a Blue Bird Powder Day! The Resorts report eight inches off perfect powder on a huge base of snow. It doesn’t get any better than this. Come and shred the Southern California Mountains. We have better snow then the Vancouver Olympics.

Besides carrying chains in your vehicle, be sure to have plenty of water, food and warm clothing. Although the weather will be gorgeous this weekend, road conditions can cause unforeseeable events. Bring suntan lotion and sunglasses after today’s storm passes through.

Weather Forecast for Big Bear City: A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR AREAS ABOVE 4000 FEET IN THE SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY DESERTS UNTIL 10 AM PST THIS MORNING.

TIMING…WIDESPREAD SHOWERS WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE MORNING BEFORE DECREASING IN THE AFTERNOON.

SNOW LEVELS…4000 TO 4500 FEET.
TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS…3 TO 5 INCHES AROUND 4500 FEET WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE IN THE HIGHEST ELEVATIONS.

IMPACTS…TRAVEL WILL BE DIFFICULT ON INTERSTATE 15 BETWEEN BAKER AND THE NEVADA STATE LINE. TRAVEL MAY BECOME IMPOSSIBLE ON UNTREATED MOUNTAIN ROADS.

WINDS…SIGNIFICANT WINDS ARE NOT EXPECTED. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES…AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.

Checklist
Remember 9-1-1 May Save Someone’s Life

Food Supplies: Is your home well stocked with supplies for seven days? If not, you are not prepared to be a mountain resident. Always keep extra food items stored for emergencies. Canned goods, powdered milk, dry staple goods are all a necessity.

Medical Supplies: Check your medicine cabinets. Do you have the basic medicines for an unexpected injury or illness? If you require weekly prescription refills, check with you doctor regarding the shelf life of your medications. If possible, order an extra two or three week supply.

Flashlights & Radios: Do you have battery-operated flashlights, kerosene lamps, candles, and battery operated radios in case of power failures?

Heating: Do you have alternative heating sources? If you have a fireplace, keep plenty of dry wood available. Check your fireplace for obstructions that may prevent free airflow. Fires, smoke damage, and suffocation can result from chimneys and heating furnaces that cannot properly vent outside.

Bottles Water: Keep bottled wated (one gallon per person per day) available for emmergency use in case pipes freeze or waterlines break.

Neighbors: Get to know your neighbors. You may have to depend on them in case of emergencies.

Emergency Phone Numbers: Keep Utility companies, doctors, hospitals, fire, and law enforcement numbers handy.

Other Important Information

Weather Forecasts: You may obtain by calling your local radio station (KBHR). Weather updates are also abvailable on your local TV cable channel 6. Road conditions for State of California Highways are available by dailing 800-427-ROAD (7623)

Snow Plow Operators: Please do not stop the snow plow operators to ask questions or comment on the service. Snow plow drivers are assigned specific areas and cannot plow other areas unless directed by their supervisor. If you need information about snowplowing, you should call the Road Yard Supervisor (909) 866-2167. Remember some snowplow drivers are not residents of your area and may not be familiar with situations pecular to your neighborhood. Also, snowplows cost the County about $90 an hour to operate and they need to keep them on the move as much as possible.

Funding: Many people appear to believe that snow removal and cindering speading costs are paid out of property taxes. However, property taxes do not pay for snow removal or cindering. These funds come from the State hIghway Users Tax, also known as gas tax. The State tax you pay as part of the cost of fuel for your car. These funds are kept separetely by the State and allocated proportionately on an annual basis to each County. When snow removal and cinder spreading costs exceed the amount allocated to the County by the State, it means that the other road maintenance projects in your area may have to be delayed in order to pay for these immediate additional costs.

Road Yard Supervisors: They are usually only available by telephone between the hours of 7:00 to 7:30 AM and 4:00 to 4:30 PM. Atother times, they are working in the field. However, you may leave a message on the telephome answering machine.

Message from the Board of Supervisors: The necessity for serving mountain-area residents in a comparatively short, but devastating snow season can seriously affect the road maintenance program for the entire County. We ask your patience and understanding during these times.

Both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit are experiencing epic conditions. The last storm increase the snow base to 48-84 inches of machine groomed packed powder. Tonights storm is expected to deliver six inches of fresh powder. Locals are saying that this is the best snow base they’ve seen since the late 60′s.

Today: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 41. South wind between 5 and 10 mph. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tonight: Snow showers likely, mainly before 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 23. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Wednesday: A 20 percent chance of snow showers before 10am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 40. Northwest wind around 5 mph.

RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW SHOWERS WILL END WEDNESDAY MORNING WITH SNOW LEVELS AROUND 5000 FEET. 4 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED ABOVE 6000 FEET IN THE SAN BERNARDINO AND RIVERSIDE COUNTY MOUNTAINS.
