Do you have a bike in your garage that is covered with dust and cobwebs? If so, dust it off and come join the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation, Big Bear Chamber, Open Air Big Bear, and the Big Bear Cycling Club, for a series of community rides in May. The rides take place the first three Saturday’s in May, (1, 8 & 15) and will be a great opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate cycling.

“It’s time to stop making excuses,” said Trails Foundation Chair, Phil Hamilton, “these rides are for everyone, so get your bike out of the garage and join us for a nice, easy ride in Big Bear!” If your excuse is that you don’t have a bike, then rent one at reduced prices from the following bike shops: Bear Valley Bikes, Blauers, Chains Required, and Get Boards.

Have a flat tire? Bring your bike and get it fixed the day of the rides. Bike mechanics will be on hand to provide basic bike maintenance from 9:00am- 10:00am at the Brownie parking lot behind Goldsmith’s. The rides will start out of the Brownie lot at 10:00am, and will last till roughly 11:00am.

Don’t have a babysitter? Bring the kids, bring your friends, and bring yourself. Get a group of co-workers, and ride together. This is a great chance to get outside and enjoy the beautiful surroundings Big Bear has to offer!

Local community leaders will be joining the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation on the Community Rides including: Mayor Liz Harris, BVUSD Superintendant Dr. Nancy Wright, Jim Miller, David Lawrence, and Cherie Haggerty from the City of Big Bear Lake, DWP Chairman Steve Foulkes, Events Resource Office Director Rick Bates, Planning Commissioner David Caretto, and Big Bear Chamber of Commerce CEO Sara Russ.

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. April 16, 2010 – One of the strongest and most talented fields ever assembled for a U.S. cycling race has been invited to the upcoming 2010 Amgen Tour of California. The 16-team field is comprised of the world’s best international professional cycling teams and a selection of top North American-based teams have there sights set to win Stage 6, which is the most challenging stage of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California eight-day event. The Queen Stage finishes in Big Bear Lake May 21, 2010.

Getting to the finish line in Big Bear Lake is no easy task. The grueling route consists of 135 miles and more than 12,000 feet of climbing through mountain passes. Stage 6, penned as “The Big Bear Climb,” should have a significant impact on the overall standings of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California.

The compelling set of teams invited to the fifth-annual race will be led by prominent UCI ProTour and Pro Continental teams, such as the three-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer and seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong’s team RadioShack; 2009’s No. 1-ranked Team HTC-Columbia, featuring sprint sensation Mark Cavendish; powerhouse Team Saxo Bank, featuring Tour of Flanders winner Fabian Cancellara and Tour de France runner-up Andy Schleck; Liquigas-Doimo, an exceptionally promising young Italian team; Colorado-based Garmin-Transitions; and BMC Racing Team, featuring current U.S. Pro champion George Hincapie.  The more than 800-mile, eight-day stage race, modeled after the Tour de France, will take the world’s top professional cycling teams from Nevada City to Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village/Agoura Hills from May 16-23.

“These teams, with the riders we expect to compete, represent the one of the strongest fields we have had at the Amgen Tour of California.  Our move to May means that we will have Tour de France contenders in prime form racing here in the Golden State,” said Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports, presenter of the race.  “We also are pleased to have a selection of top North American-based Continental teams, who will have a chance to compete with some of the world’s best riders.”

Split between teams who compete on the UCI ProTour and those who race predominately in the United States, the field of 128 athletes will be one of the most diverse, accomplished groups of cyclists ever assembled for a stage race in the United States.

“In a few short years the Amgen Tour of California has become America’s Grand Tour, one of our country’s premier sporting events, and a showcase for the demanding and dramatic California landscape,” said Bob Stapleton, owner of Team HTC-Columbia.  “Team HTC-Columbia will contend for both the General Classification and stage wins with top riders Michael Rogers, Mark Cavendish and an exceptional supporting cast of athletes.” 

Along with ProTour and Pro Continental teams, the domestic teams will be represented by return competitors Bissell, BMC Racing Team, Cervélo TestTeam, Fly V Australia, Jelly Belly Presented by Kenda, Kelly Benefit Strategies, Team Type 1, UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis, and new competitor, Canada’s SpiderTech Powered by Planet Energy.

“The entire Fly V Australia team is looking forward to going head-to-head with the best teams and riders in the world in the 2010 Amgen Tour of California,” said Chris White, team director of Fly V Australia.  “This is the biggest race of the year for our team and a great test for our riders.”

(Big Bear Lake, CA – February 11, 2010) – Bear Mountain is offering a dose of the Olympic Spirit as they unveil the only Superpipe available in Southern California. This 18-feet high, 580-feet long and 65-foot wide competition-class pipe is now open to all skiers and snowboarders who visit Bear Mountain. In addition to the opening of this massive pipe, Bear Mountain’s Park is getting a serious facelift as the park development crew makes use of more than five feet of fresh snow to build a variety of great new features. 

“Bear Mountain’s Superpipe is a big attraction, drawing snowboarders and skiers from all over the region who want to feel what it’s like to ride a pipe just like the USA Olympic Team,” said Chris Riddle, Director of Marketing for Big Bear Mountain Resorts. “This impressive feature gives seasoned riders a chance to channel their inner-Olympian and spectators an up close look at an X-Games-worthy pipe. Big Bear Lake CA; A winter advisory remains in effect until 10:00 AM this morning. Winds may gust to 35 mph. Our overnight snowfall was eight inches and another foot of accumulation is possible. Road conditions are R2, if you’re vehicle is not 4 wheel drive, you’ll need to chain up.

Snow conditions are the best -Today is a Blue Bird Powder Day! The Resorts report eight inches off perfect powder on a huge base of snow. It doesn’t get any better than this. Come and shred the Southern California Mountains. We have better snow then the Vancouver Olympics.

Besides carrying chains in your vehicle, be sure to have plenty of water, food and warm clothing. Although the weather will be gorgeous this weekend, road conditions can cause unforeseeable events. Bring suntan lotion and sunglasses after today’s storm passes through.
