THE $50,000 FISH THAT GOT AWAY

One Tagged Fish Caught at Big Bear Lake’s Fishin’ for $50K Comes up Short

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif./ June 14, 2011 – David Kanteman of Sugarloaf, Calif. reeled in a tagged trout at Big Bear Lake’s 3rd Annual Fishin’ for $50K Trout Derby. Kanteman (15) caught the tagged trout on PowerBait from the shore at Metcalf Bay. Unfortunately, it was not the winning tag number for the grand prize of $50,000.

“I had high hopes that we would give the big money to the local kid from Sugarloaf,” said Alan Sharp, owner of Big Bear Marina and tournament director for Fishin’ for $50K. “It would have been great to hand him $50,000, but unfortunately it was the wrong number. One thing for certain is the fishing was phenomenal including some huge trophy-size trout.”

Kanteman won a two-night overnight trip to Big Bear Lake courtesy of Pine Knot Guest Ranch, two tickets to Snow Summit Scenic Sky Chair and a 4-hour pontoon boat rental courtesy of Big Bear Marina. In addition, Kanteman walked away with Shakespeare Fishing rod and reel combo, Flambeau tackle box, and Rapala and Luhr Jensen lures.

The fishing event drew 673 participants total, with 531 adult anglers and 71 junior anglers (16 and under). Other prizes awarded included $500 each for largest trout caught by adult male and adult female. Maria Leverett from Victorville, Calif. won $500 in the Adult Female class, and Robert Kimura from Los Angeles, Calif. won the $500 prize in the Adult Male class. Kimura also won a bonus prize of $500 for the largest trout caught on Berkley PowerBait. $200 savings bond each was awarded for largest trout caught by Junior Boy and Girl (16 and under). Robert Ash from Sugarloaf, Calif. won first place in the Junior Boy class and Kyleigh Villa from Palm Springs, Calif. won first place Junior Girl class. Listed are the winners in each class and weight of the winning catches.

Jim Hall May Trout Classic – Update

Monday’s Update: Big Bear Lake’s first fishing contest of the 2011 season is in the record books.  Over $6,000.00 in total prize money was handed out to nine lucky fishermen who traveled from as far away as Las Vegas to participate in the Jim Hall Memorial May Trout Classic.  The winning fish, caught by Jack Storti of Westlake Village, weighed in at 9.10 pounds.  Second place went to David Marshall, a Big Bear City local, who landed a 8.78 pound rainbow trout on the second day of the event.

In the junior division, ages 12-15, Cody Hemsley from Fontana was the winning angler with a rainbow weighing in at 2.39 pounds.  The winner of the pee-wee division was Michael Torres from Orange County who landed a 2.59 pound trout on the stormy second day of the tournament.  Both boys received new fishing rods and and a variety of fishing tackle.

On Sunday morning the weather turned from bad to worse, with snow showers chasing everybody off the lake.  ”It was a success in spite of the weather” said Jacque Hall, tournament chairwoman, “The money we’ve raised will be used to pay for future rainbow trout fish plants, and that’s the way Jim would have wanted it”

The next fishing contest of the season is Aaron’s Spring Bass Tournament on May 21, 2011.

The May Trout Classic is in full swing today with over 360 anglers participating in the tournament.  “The fish are really biting today and we’re blessed with perfect fishing weather”, says Jason Hall, the tournament chairman.  “We have 364 registered fishermen, women and children on the lake today and we have not sold out, so come on up and join the fun”

The largest fish caught so far today has weighed in at 2.21 pounds, taken by Dave Brown of Anaheim.  The field is wide open for larger fish to be taken.  ”Everyone seems to be catching their limit but the average weight is lower than we expected”.  ”This is the best scenario for us” added Hall, “Someone could potentially win this tournament with just an average size fish and that makes it fun for anglers of all ages”.

The Jim Hall Memorial May Trout Classic will continue until 2pm Sunday afternoon.  Contact Big Bear Marina for additional information.

Big Bear Lake Trout Fishing Hot-Spots

Fishing for 50K - Big Bear Lake CA

Big Bear Lake has excellent trout fishing year-round.  The trick is knowing where the fish are likely to be during certain times of the year.  Here are some of the “not so secret spots” that consistently produce good fishing action.

During the spring months the fish are in shallower water and our local trout population is busy spawning in many of the streams and tributaries that feed into Big Bear Lake.  But a word of caution, fishing is prohibited in these streams until after Memorial Day weekend and the fines are huge.  If you can find where a spring is emptying into the lake, try fishing the waters just offshore. One of these areas is the inner waters of Boulder Bay.  The recently completed parking area here makes this one of the most user friendly fishing spots.

Some of the best shore fishing spots are located on the North Shore, from the dam to the West Boat Ramp.  There are several places right off North Shore Drive (Highway 38) where you can pull off the road and fish right next to your car. Also, Juniper Point, on the north shore near the East Boat Ramp is a great spot in early spring. The parking area is a short walk to the shoreline.  Some of these areas require that an Adventure Pass must be displayed on your car before you can park there.  Check with the Ranger Station on North Shore Drive.

The most productive fishing spots on Big Bear Lake are the areas that make up the “Trout Triangle” on the west side of the lake.  “The Triangle” is basically the waters along the south shore of the lake from about Gilner Point west to the dam, and from the dam, east along the North Shore to Windy Point, and back across the lake to the South Shore. The triangle is best fished from a boat because if one area isn’t producing you can easily motor over to another spot and give it a try..

No matter what area you choose, Big Bear Lake Trout fishing is one of the best ways to enjoy our alpine paradise.

Tales of Big Bear Lake CA

Government Cabins on Big Bear Lake

Lloyd and His Spinner

Of course there were professional guides to help the novice-folks who wanted to fish and one of the most colorful was Jack Lloyd. He knew all of the holes where the “big boys” lurked under the rotting pine branches at the bottom, the same limbs Lynn and Moyer had cut on the ice to get the logs.

Jack was all right, tough rather on the braggart side, but he generally brought home the bacon (fish).

When alone on the lake it was often early and the folks in the cabins on the government near the Dam wanted most their sleep; they were there to recuperate.

Now Lloyd’s idea was different – he was making a living and he believed in advertising; so when he caught a big one he would hold it in mid-air yelling “another big one caught on Jack Lloyd’s spinner”. Of course, his voice awakened many a sleeper at five a.m. so his name was well known. And my own eyes saw three of Jack’s big trout on the scale at Bartletts and the weight was twenty pounds. Big fish; big fisherman.

Lundes’ Red Ants

As you drop down the last hill before reaching the final turn towards the business center of the Valley, you are following Red Ant Creek and you cross it under your road at the above turn. In the summer it has but a small flow, but in the spring it can be quite a torrent.

On the banks of the stream among the pines, two of the old timers camped for a season or two and the spot was delightful. There was one drawback – the ants, and they were the big variety which can really bite. Well, this couple liked the Valley, so they built a camp on the lake where the stream meets the water. Boats were rented also, and Andrew and Minnie Lunde were seen often on the lake, as they were great fishermen, and the stream was named by them Red Ant Creek.
