Things To Do Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Ceremonies- On May 25, 2009 the Big Bear Valley Marine Corps League Detachment 1038,the American Legion Post 584, and the City of Big Bear Lake will participate in a special program commemorating the sacrifices of the United States military personnel in all our wars. The keynote speaker for the solemn event is Colonel Wes Weston, Assistant Chief of Staff, G-4, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, 29-Palms, California. The 2009 ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. with a procession of the symbolic hearse from the intersection of Village Drive and Pine Knot led by Major Nelson Reynolds, USAF Ret. and his bagpipes. At 10:00 a.m. the symbolic hearse and casket will arrive at Veterans Park. The public is cordially invited to join veterans and families of service personnel, past and present to participate in the procession and ceremony at Veterans Park. The 41st annual RTMC Astronomy Expo- will take place on Friday, May 22 through Monday, May 25, 2009 (Memorial Day weekend). It will be held at YMCA Camp Oakes, five miles southeast of Big Bear City, California on State Route 38 at Lake Williams Road between mileposts 44 and 45. Fire Safety Summer Kick-Off; 10am-2pm.
Join the local fire departments and find out how to kick off summer in a fire safe way. Information on fire preparedness will be available and activities for the whole family. Free!
Kayak Tour;

Gold Panning; 11am-
12pm.
Come learn how to pan for gold! Children will learn the process of gold panning, using real panning equipment. The “gold” is pyrite, and children can take home their findings along with an informational handout and a certificate! Fee: $3
Map & Compass;
12pm-1pm.
You won’t get lost in the woods with these skills! You will have the opportunity to walk a course to test the skills you have learned. FREE ~ Donations appreciated.
High Flying Rockets; 1pm-2pm. Get a chance to build your own rocket from recycled materials then see how high it flies. Class limited to 12, sign-up at the front desk. FREE ~ Donations appreciated.
Nature Walks;
1pm & 2pm.
Free 30-minute guided walk.
Canoe Tour; 4pm-6pm. Reservations suggested, for more information visit our tour page. Fee: $25 adults, $15 children (6-12).
Music in the Mountains ~ The Ramblin’ Rangers; Bluegrass & Folk, 7pm
As the breakout bluegrass band from last year’s “Bluegrass, Bluejeans and Beyond” music festival at the Discovery Center, The Ramblin’ Rangers, a group of San Bernardino National Forest rangers who protect our national treasure by day, will perform their brand of mountain music at this season’s opener on Memorial Weekend. Kurt Winchester, Fire Chief, is very vocal with his singing and love for The San Bernardinos; written and performed by Mike Cross, on bass and vocals joined by band members Molly Bough, and Richard Thornburgh. Fee: $5 Admission; 12 and under free; Tickets available online or in the

CitiBank Show & Shine and Pinewood Derby- Lots of fun for the car enthusiast and the whole family! Car show and Pinewood Derby in the CitiBank lot, 41969 Big Bear Blvd., BBL. Bear Country Fair at Moonridge Animal Park- It is a family affair at this year’s annual Bear Country Fair held in the Moonridge Animal Park on Sunday, May 24, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM., where there is something for everyone including an animal feeding tour following the fair activities. Face painting, jewelry making, and pine cone bear tossing and walnut tosses will be featured. Youngsters can make their own artistic collages. Children 12 and under can enter the count the Bears in the Jar Contest. They can also have a roaring good time as they participate in the Bear Roaring Contest. That’s not all! Who can you guess which of our three black bears will win the pie eating contest? Park admission is $9 for ages 11 – 59; $6 for ages 3-10 and seniors 60 plus, and free to children under 3. Members of the Friends of the Moonridge Zoo are admitted free. If you are not a member, you can join. Parking is also free.
